Years ago the head instructor of White Lion, Josh Spray, left the Bushi Kai of Tora Jutsu to open his own school. At that time he was a student of Renshi David Pierce, International Area Director of the Kokusai Tora Jutsu Kyokai and 6th degree black belt. All was well and no one ever dreamed that an opportunity to grow would come so quickly but; good things come to those who work hard. Sensei Spray has been selected to take on a Masters training program in preparation for becoming a Tora Jutsu Master and as a result the Kokusai Tora Jutsu Kyokai International Tora Jutsu Federation have decided to step in and lend a helping hand. Another black belt under Renshi Pierce, Master Davenport, has agreed to act as the supervising Master while Sensei Josh is gone for training. Master Davenport is the School Director/Owner of the Taylorsville Tora Jutsu school so he will be doing double duty in 2013-2014. Now that is great news but what is even better news is that I will have moved around my speaking schedule and will be able to supervise and teach at the Heber school as well for 2013-2014. Each year, as Grandmaster, I get the opportunity to work with one school and this year it is in Heber, Utah. Sensei Kwinten Kemp will be acting as Senior Instructor and he will be receiving lots of help from the other Tora Jutsu schools in the area and their instructors and students. Sp Yee Haw and welcome Heber, Utah we are thrilled to have you under our wing.

Things That Matter Most https://torajutsu.com/285/things-that-matter-most/ Tue, 09 Apr 2013 06:47:02 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=285 We have a lot of schools in our system and for the most part they seem to move along through the years with little or no issues. However, once in a while something will come up that will cause a speed bump of some sort and when it does it requires everyone to remember what is most important and then move forward with that goal.
Not long ago one of our schools ran into such a speed bump and it was all the rage to go on and on about it. Mistakes had been made and things became confusing and it seemed as if the world was about to end. Never mind the fact that children were dying from a mass murderer in America, never mind the fact that floods were washing away entire villages full our system families. No; the trials of this school were the most significant trials ever faced by humans at any time in history and in spite of the fact the solution had been realized the world continued to spin sideways. Not long after the dust had settled on the trials they faced another set of trials came up even worse and threatened the very future of the school! Now the good news; neither trial ended with the world in rubble, neither trial resulted in the mass loss of life, and neither trial shook the school into oblivion and why? Because the head of that school knew what mattered most and simply wasn’t willing to collapse into negativity. Instead this great leader found a way to dig through the minutia and focus on the goal. This teacher knew the value of the saying “never let things that matter most stand at the mercy of things that matter least!”
When we know what matters in our life we are able to step over the hot coals and through the thistle patch knowing that it’s worth it and our final destination will make the pain go away. When we focus on what really matters: love, life, friendship, belief, faith, hope, charity, and happiness we are able to face trials with a proper perspective. Was it challenging? Yes! Did anybody die? No! Was it annoying? Yes! Did it result in a burden that would last for decades? No! You see, we can look at things in a proper light and then the pain lessons, the trial relents, and life can be a little sunnier. Here is a quick example; I was on a speaking trip out of town a few years back. I had to go, it was a tough call because I knew my wife was due and I certainly didn’t want to miss the birth but we decided that it would probably be ok so I left. When I arrived at my hotel I called home only to find out that my wife had gone into labor during my flight and was already at the hospital having the baby without me. I missed it and to make matters worse our little one ended up in the NICU for a few days due to low oxygen flow and it gave us quite a scare. Now, that is a sad tale but you know what? We knew what mattered most and the fact that our little guy was here, going to be fine, and waiting for dad to meet him was just fine. You see, a year or so prior to this my wife was pregnant and we lost the baby. It was tragic, it was tough, but we survived because we knew what mattered most and felt good about the situation; my wife was well and we could try again. When put in the right perspective the fact that I missed the birth suddenly because quite secondary to the fact that the birth happened at all and that it went relatively well and now our little man is a happy and healthy boy that talks constantly and takes great joy in beating up his big brothers; seriioulsy, he really does.
Never put the things that matter most at the mercy of the things that matter least!

Bully Be Gone! https://torajutsu.com/284/bully-be-gone/ Tue, 09 Apr 2013 06:24:07 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=284 There are a lot of programs out there to combat the ever growing menace of bullies in our schools. With each new incidence that makes the news we see another dozen or so programs that come out to combat bullying and end this behavior once and for all. News flash, bullies have been around since the dawn of time and I don’t think they are going anywhere soon. My son recently started showing some of the signs of being bullied and sure enough we found out that he was. My neighbors kids were bullied, dozens of students in our martial arts schools suffer from bullies at school. I recall a bully when I was young and how it was dealt with; just a note…we don’t’ encourage that sort of solution these days. But here is the real issue; since when were bullies limited to youth and only at school? Society is full of bullies in the workplace, on the road, in the store, in our neighborhoods, and most importantly online. In my opinion the bullies of the world must have cheered and partied all night when social media became a reality! Seriously, bullying is a cowards game to begin with; pick on someone weaker or different and then jump on their differences all day, every day. As far as I can see the rules of the game have not yet changed so when a group of stronger, more balanced, individuals gather together against the bully they run like melting snow off a mountain. The internet let’s bullies be as tough as they want without the fear of actual confrontation! Yep, the internet is a bullies paradise but here’s a newsflash; the same rules apply to bully busting online as they do in real life.
Recently a young lady with down syndrome suffered from profound bullying. A caring mom asked the local quarterback of the football team to maybe look out for her a bit. He did far more than that; the whole team ended up looking out for her and it not only ended the bullying it made national news. I call this TPG or Tactical Positive Grouping and we teach this in Tora Jutsu and to the kids in the Kids Brigade program www.kidsbrigade.org. TPG surrounds those who suffer from the taunts of bullies with positive friendship, love, caring, and support. The mass of positive outweighs the darts of negative every time. Bullies are not the majority, they are the annoying minority and they shrink when public opinion and support covers them over like a bright sun on a warm summers day. When it comes to social media we need to do the same thing; TPG Tactical Positive Grouping “online” and we do this by avoiding the spread of nasty rumors and hurtful comments and take a stand against this kind of negativity. Today I heard a report about the flu vaccine and would you believe it; someone actually tracked the tweet patterns surrounding how people responded to the flu vaccine! They found that the negative commentary about the vaccine spread like wildfire while positive comments hardly spread at all! You see it has become a part of human nature to spread negative, it’s effortless, it’s easy, it’s intriguing and so sordid! Now imagine if we spread the positive in life as quickly as we did the negative; it would have an amazing impact on our world and bullies would be so weak they would literally cease to exist!
So here’s the challenge, spread positive! Use TPG Tactical Positive Grouping to surround those in need with an abundance of love and support. Put so many positive people in between the bullies and their victims that they have no power at all. Avoid spreading rumors! Avoid sharing negative stories! If it didn’t happen to you then don’t tell it to others and if it did happen to you and it’s negative then find a positive light and keep the good moving forward. We can do it, I’m certain of it!

Grab baby grab https://torajutsu.com/159/grab-baby-grab-2/ Sun, 16 Dec 2012 16:22:07 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=159 Every now and then I have the fortune to watch other families deal with the dining trials that beset me and my lovely wife when we head out to the restaurant. On this trip I found myself in the great green, and gold, homeland of the Green Bay Packers. Did you know that if you walk through the Fox River mall during football season two out of every three mall patrons will be wearing some form of green and gold. Add to it the brightly crafted faux fungi headwear and its Packers #1 as far as the eye can see. You betcha! (What else can I say?) So, this particular meal was a late afternoon lunch at a local family favorite. Happy families coming in from the blistering cold for a quick refuel during their holiday quest. I was about to be schooled in the art of persistence by a one year old, in a green jumper covered with mashed potatoes, of course.

As I found my booth I quickly noticed a scene that rang oh so true, a young couple shoveling in as much as they could, as fast as they could, while their four small children burned through both their food, and their parents patience. Today’s teacher was sitting at the end of the table slumped down in the grand high chair; king of the table, watched by everyone in the area, except the parents. This young lad was smart as a whip and perhaps the most determined creature I have ever seen. Each time the parents would turn away the youngster would reach out, grab their plate, straw, roll, etc. and declare it as his own. The parents would nonchalantly notice and push their plates and glasses away. Again and again he reached out, finger tips at the ready, ever carefully drawing the parents plates back to his lair. If he ever found himself unable to reach the food he would wait, let out a little cry, and the parents would turn and give him some of their food. Like Pavlov’s dog, these young parents responded each time the baby bell gave a little ring.

I’m fairly certain that he ate more than anyone at that table; unfettered by the witty repartee of the parents, un-phased by the constant skirmishes between siblings. He was focused, committed, determined to reach his goal, and nothing would stand in his way. He used a fork, spoon, his chubby hands, even the napkin the plate was on as a means to an end. Whatever presented itself, in whatever form, he saw it as a tool and carefully crafted his plan. When others looked away he focused even harder, when extra items found their way into the goalie box of his mouth he would snatch them up and devour them before the parents had a chance to see they were gone. What a lesson, a living breathing, pooping object lesson on perseverance, focus, and absolute commitment to a goal.

What if I approached the problems in my life with such tenacity and determination? What if I found every option, every tool, every opportunity to come closer to my objective, and used it without hesitation. How often do I find myself strolling along in a melancholy state oblivious to the world around me and the opportunities that may be presenting themselves at every turn? My mentor showed me it could be done, anything could be done, with unwavering faith, single minded determination, and the patience to wait out opportunity or make it for myself. Well done, oh bottle fed, mashed potato and pea laden wise one. I will take your lessons to heart, I will focus, and I will conquer my dreams. I feel better, I feel strong, after all if a diaper wearing, non-educated, jobless mute could do it, so can I.

Humility and Johnny Verbeck https://torajutsu.com/161/humility-and-johnny-verbeck/ Mon, 10 Dec 2012 16:25:37 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=161 When I was just a wee lad my daddy used to sing this song called “Johnny Verbeck” over and over and over again. He sang it on trips, he sang it on drives, he sang it when we were camping with siblings, cousins, and so on. I learned it, I taught my kids, and now they teach their kids. Now, daddy was born in the 1920’s and said he heard it when he was a kid so this is one seriously old song! The premise of this little tune is that a local Dutch butcher invented a sausage machine and soon the neighbors’ pets began to disappear; you get the picture. It is a morbid tale but one that seems to carry with it a hidden message and one that when properly thought upon seems to be quite intended by the author.

As a child I always appreciated the witty bouncy polka-like nature of the tune but as an adult I see the lesson crawling from the tale. Johnny made a machine; he was very proud of it and apparently used it to rid the neighborhood of wandering pets. A young rotund customer actually blew a whistle and the sausages began to prance about like little Jimmy Dean zombies. In time the machine broke down and Johnny crawled inside to diagnose the problem. His lovely wife, apparently given to sleep walking, went on a midnight stroll and for whatever reason decided to give the machine a go and voila, it worked! In a single crank the chef became the meal. No further explanation is given, no consoling moral is presented, just crank, crack, sausage! Now that I write it out, it’s no wonder my kids had nightmares after I crooned them into slumber with that little piece of Poe.

So what of the story? Simply put, I believe that Johnny became infatuated with his own ability and goodness. He became lazy, became self absorbed, and began to consume anything and everything around him. In time, the machine broke and instead of asking for help, he simply climbed into his own ego and his wife ground him up the way life does the self absorbed soul. Ok, yes, I could be reading more into this than was intended but seriously, who writes that without some deeper meaning? I am convinced that it is a warning to us all; sometimes the slow way is the sure way and don’t think you have all the answers since you might just grind yourself up. It is a keen reminder to me, it is perhaps a keen reminder to you, but no matter what, we must all recognize our need for one another, our need to do the hard work sometimes, and our need to not consume others like Johnny’s machine consumed pets. I hope that we all can practice the spirit of Karma and give good out and get good back.

By the way, if you really want to get the full emotional experience just let me know and I’ll be happy to sing it to you! Bang! (eventually, you will understand)

What is love? https://torajutsu.com/157/what-is-love/ Sat, 08 Dec 2012 16:20:12 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=157 I often sit in the corner facing the dining room so that I have the best vantage point on all the action. I can hear everything, see everything, it’s like a giant buffet of ideas and information and my brain likes to stuff itself until it’s sick. I usually pick up on some cool piece of gossip or the latest story in Carol’s life after she and her husband returned from Russia but, today was different; today life taught me a lesson I can never forget. Today at the Chuck-a-Rama buffet in Utah I saw the true meaning of love and devotion.

I watched as they came in; they moved slowly, quietly but the love was obvious in their face and you could tell they were as happy as the day they first met over fifty years ago. His sea blue sweater open, his shirt neatly tucked into his pants, you could tell he dressed for dinner. She was in a wheel chair, head bent with age but hair in perfect form. Her nails were done neatly and you could tell her outfit had been carefully chosen from the navy blue jacket to her black leather shoes. Her makeup was done neatly and she smiled, but you could tell that there was an absence in her. The keen and, no doubt, wonderful woman of the past had faded some, but her husband stood by her and you could almost see them so long ago holding hands, raising their family, living their life full of love.

He passed me and removed a chair from their little four top in the center of the room near the buffet line and then gently nudged her wheel chair into position. Hands on her shoulders, he whispered to her and then took off his sweater and placed it around her shoulders. He made sure she had some water, placed her straw in it ever so carefully, gave her a sip and then quietly walked to the buffet line. She sat almost motionless, head bent slightly, looking down and not really registering a great deal but you could see that she was at peace and felt very much in love. When he returned, she glanced upward and smiled, placed her hand on his cheek as he arranged her plate. He buttered her roll, cut her meat, and lovingly placed her napkin so as to protect her fine shirt and jacket. He smiled often, talked to her, held her hand and situated the sweater around her shoulders. He then went back and got his plate and together they sat quietly, saying next to nothing but exchanging flirtatious glances and eyefuls of love.

As I watched, my food grew cold but my heart was full and as warm as it had ever been. I was watching love in real life and when you see it for real, in living color, it takes your breath away and fills your soul with emotion. They finished, he scooted her out from the table, replaced the chair, and together they left the restaurant. I couldn’t help but notice that the evening western sun was shining through the windows and the rays seemed to provide a closing curtain to the real life drama that I had just witnessed. I paused, collected myself, realized that I had tears in both eyes and said a little prayer that I would live long enough to show that kind of love. Then it dawned on me, he didn’t start today, he had been showing that kind of love for decades.

Get Into It! https://torajutsu.com/155/get-into-it/ Fri, 07 Dec 2012 16:17:30 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=155 Far too often in life I hear people speak of the situations they simply can not get out of at work, school, etc. They speak of coworker issues, problems with communication, questions of motivation, and of course the all to oft recited financial woe. No doubt these are all difficult issues that test ones wits and patience but in the long run there usually isn’t an easy way out and typically folks get to just deal with It from day to day. When one is left in that all to common scenario of just “dealing with it” there are really You can quit and go do something else; not very productive. Or, you can simply find a way to push through and find some lemonade in all those lemons. My daddy used to have a saying “if you can’t get out of it, get into it!” and over the years I have found that dad knew what he was talking about!

When you are faced with the obvious reality that “through” is the only path, you have to get your head on straight to make it. You have to find a way to see the silver lining, make something of the mud around you and turn frustration into joy. For me the first real test came on the farm; no real surprise there. I would often have to sit on the canal bank and guard the road while the cows grazed along the canal and fence line. It was hot, it was dull, and most of all it was just plain boring! Hours of just sitting there like watching paint dry on a white wall. I did break the monotony up once with a little dip in the canal but that was short lived and involved a whole bunch of blood sucking leeches. Books didn’t help, we didn’t’ have ipads, headphones and portable music systems had not yet been invented. Just sit, stare, sit, starve, sit, whine, sit, moan, sit, sit, sit. Oddly enough the cows never moved a muscle. Not once did they actually try to get past my post. I was killing time and it was killing me back.

Dad gave me his famous advice “If you can’t get out of it, get into it” and it bounced around in my head until one day it hit me; do something! I started out with a metal bat and a whole bunch of little rocks from the road next to the canal; I bet my batting average doubled that year. Next I started writing down short stories that I ended up using during school. Finally, my martial arts teacher advised me to use the time to improve my skills and that is when that time went from dull to critical in my life. I started to beg to watch the cows so that I could have time to practice my karate. Year after year, summer after summer I trained while watching cows. It started to pay off and my life became so much better. I grew stronger, I was happier, and overall I just felt better. I found a way to improve my time in the face of absolute nothingness. In time I added my meditation studies and I found that whenever I began to meditate the horses would congregate right on the other side of the fence and just sit there. I often wondered what they knew that I did not but alas, that one is still a mystery.

So when you are stuck in life, living in a cul-de-suck, dead end job, relationship issues, and financial issues, just ponder these magic words and life will improve. Ask yourself how you can turn your troubles in to triumphs, If you can’t get out of it, get into it! Get into it and life will grant you passage, knowledge, and above all a new understanding of what matters most in your life. Good Luck!

Your Super Hero Power! https://torajutsu.com/140/your-super-hero-power/ Fri, 09 Nov 2012 07:44:23 +0000 http://torajutsu.com/?p=140 Every day I have three or four super heroes bounding through my house; Captain America, Batman, Spider Man, and Iron Man seem to be the favorites these days. Last night was Halloween so the kids were in seventh heaven with all of their other “Super” friends walking around. My middle son was jumping from steps and planters in front of every house. I asked him if he was flying around and he quickly responded “Dad, Captain America can’t fly”. He made an interesting point and it started me thinking; my kids all like to portray super heroes that don’t really have any super power! Ok, so Spider Man does shoot webs out of his hands but let’s face it, what are a few webs against Superman! Now, before all the Spidey enthusiasts send me hate mail, let’s try to stay on point. Peter Parker, and the others are just every day average folks but they have one very important Super Power in common; they all share a deep belief in a cause worth fighting for and worth dying for if need be. They all found a way to build the tools necessary for them to protect themselves as they went out and fought for what they believe in most. I realized right then that we all have the ability to be a Super Hero, we all have the ability to fight for what is right, the question is what cause means enough to us to actually activate our Super Power and call us into action?

I’ll write more about this in the future but for now just take a minute and ask yourself “What cause do I feel strongly enough about to actually dedicate myself and fight for what is right?” Find your super power, find your courage, but be advised, this call to action comes with a warning…for every super hero there is also a villain and when you activate one you activate the other! I guess that’s what makes it a Super Power; if it was easy then everyone would do it. Oh, don’t forget, by the way, the Super Hero always wins.
